Swarfega was developed in the UK in 1947 as a solvent-free hand cleaner for removing grease, oil and industrial grime from the hands of engineers, mechanics and factory workers, without the skin damage caused by petrol, paraffin and harsh solvents. The iconic green gel in its distinctive tub became a fixture in every engineering workshop, garage and factory in the UK, and the name became generic in much the same way as Hoover and Biro.

Swarfega is now part of SC Johnson Professional, the institutional and workplace products division of SC Johnson, which acquired Deb Group (the parent of Swarfega and the DEB skin care range) in 2015. The combined SC Johnson Professional, DEB and Swarfega portfolio covers the full range of workplace skin care, from skin protection (pre-work creams and gloves) through skin cleansing (hand cleaners from light to heavy-duty) to skin restoration (conditioning creams), in a system approach that addresses the occupational skin health requirements of UK workplace health and safety.

DEB skin protection creams — the DEB Stokoderm range of pre-work skin protection creams applied before work begins to create a barrier between the skin and industrial contaminants, available in water-resistant formulations for wet work and oil and solvent-resistant formulations for dry chemical work. They form the first step of the three-step occupational skin care programme, reducing skin penetration by chemicals during the working day.

DEB skin conditioning and after-work creams — the DEB Stokolan range of skin conditioning creams for use after cleansing and at the end of the working day to restore skin moisture and support skin health in workers regularly exposed to industrial cleansers and chemical contact. Regular use of an after-work conditioning cream is the single most effective step in reducing occupational dermatitis in manufacturing and construction.
