About Starrett
The L.S. Starrett Company was founded in 1880 in Athol, Massachusetts by Laroy Starrett. It was built on his invention of the combination square, a measuring tool that brought together a rule, square, mitre and level in a single instrument. From that beginning the company has grown into a comprehensive manufacturer of precision measuring instruments and cutting tools, keeping its manufacturing base in Athol and in Jedburgh, Scotland.
Starrett’s precision measuring range, covering micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators, combination squares, protractors, telescoping gauges and surface gauges, is used in engineering workshops, toolrooms, quality departments and manufacturing operations worldwide. The brand carries real technical authority in the precision tool market: Starrett instruments are specified where accuracy matters and the user knows what makes a precision tool perform.
Starrett’s cutting tool range, including bi-metal hole saws, band saw blades and reciprocating saw blades, is made to the same standards as the precision instruments. Combination squares and layout tools. Starrett combination square sets in 150 mm (6″), 300 mm (12″) and 600 mm (24″) blade lengths with square head, centre head and protractor head; hardened and ground blades with etched graduations; and machined cast iron heads with precision-ground faces. The combination square is the most versatile layout tool in the engineering toolbox, and the Starrett version is the reference standard others are measured against.
Micrometers and vernier instruments. Starrett outside micrometers in the 436 series (vernier) and 733 series (digital) from 0–25 mm to large-bore ranges; inside micrometers for bore measurement; and Starrett vernier calipers in 150 mm and 300 mm ranges. All are made in the USA to the accuracy standards Starrett has held for more than 140 years, with individually calibrated instruments available on request.
Dial test indicators and surface gauges. Starrett lever-type dial test indicators (Last Word series) for machine tool setup and component inspection; plunger-type dial indicators in the 25 and 81 series; and Starrett surface gauges with hardened spindle and fine adjustment for scribing parallel lines and measuring surface heights. The Starrett Last Word indicator is one of the most respected dial test indicators on the professional market.
Bi-metal hole saws and cutting tools. Starrett Fast Cut and Deep Cut bi-metal hole saws in diameters from 14 mm to 152 mm for cutting mild steel, stainless steel, cast iron, copper and non-ferrous metals, together with arbors, pilot drills and hole saw kits. We can also supply Starrett Versatix MP band saw blades in bi-metal construction for cutting mixed materials including metal, wood and plastics on a single blade specification.

Good to Know
The Starrett combination square blade is hardened and ground on both edges and both faces, so it works as a precision rule as well as a square blade, accurate enough for direct measurement as well as scribing and layout. The graduations are etched and filled rather than printed, so they stay legible throughout the tool’s life.
