A German screw manufacturer founded in Ennepetal in 1967, producing the SPAX multi-material screw. About Spax

SPAX International GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1967 in Ennepetal, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The company built the SPAX screw around a set of proprietary features that together make it more versatile and faster to drive than a standard woodscrew: the 4CUT point geometry that cuts into the material rather than pushing it aside, the serrated partial thread that reduces the risk of splitting timber, and the T-STAR plus Torx-compatible drive that gives better bit engagement and less cam-out than Pozi or Phillips.

The idea behind the SPAX multi-material screw is that a single specification, across a range of diameters and lengths, can be used in wood, chipboard, MDF, OSB, plywood, hard plastics, light composites and even into masonry and metal in thin gauges, without the pre-drilling and pilot holes that conventional screws need in many materials. For carpenters, joiners, shopfitters and general builders who use screws across lots of different materials, sticking to one SPAX range keeps stock holding simple.

SPAX has since extended beyond the original multi-material screw into specialist categories: SPAX decking screws with T-STAR plus drive and stainless steel for outdoor use, SPAX construction screws for structural timber applications with published load values, and SPAX PowerLag and HEX screws for heavy timber framing. All keep the same SPAX standards of point geometry, thread profile and drive design.

Products We Can Supply from Spax

SPAX universal multi-material screws. SPAX T-STAR plus (Torx-compatible) multi-material screws in 3.0 mm to 6.0 mm diameters and lengths from 12 mm to 200 mm, in a zinc yellow-passivated finish for general indoor use, in partial thread and full thread configurations for different fixing jobs. They are available in bulk containers (200 to 1,000 piece) and trade value packs. The 4CUT point lets them self-drill in most timbers and boards without pre-drilling, and the serrated thread geometry reduces the risk of splitting.

SPAX decking and outdoor screws. SPAX decking screws in stainless steel A2 and A4 with T-STAR plus drive and a countersunk head for face-fixing softwood and hardwood deck boards, in 4.5 mm and 5.0 mm diameters from 40 mm to 100 mm. The SPAX Wirox (silver) corrosion-resistant finish suits treated timber and external work where standard zinc coating is not enough. We can also supply SPAX plug-in decking clips for hidden fixing of grooved deck boards.

SPAX construction and structural screws. SPAX LPX and CFK structural screws in 6 mm to 10 mm diameters for structural timber connections, post bases, joist hangers and general structural carpentry. The partial thread generates clamping force between joined timbers, and published ETA approval and characteristic values allow them to be specified in engineered timber calculations. T-STAR plus drive runs throughout for consistent drive torque and reduced cam-out.

SPAX specialty ranges. SPAX chipboard screws for furniture and cabinet assembly in MDF, chipboard and melamine-faced board; SPAX drywall screws in coarse thread for timber studs and fine thread for metal studs; and SPAX window and door frame screws for through-frame fixing into masonry.

Industries

SPAX screws are used by carpenters and joiners, furniture and cabinet makers, shopfitters, general builders, drywall fixers, decking and fencing contractors, timber frame manufacturers and any tradesperson who needs a high-quality, versatile screw for professional work in timber, board materials and composites.

Good to Know

The T-STAR plus drive on SPAX screws is Torx-compatible but cut to a slightly tighter fit than standard Torx. A standard Torx bit will drive SPAX screws, but the matching SPAX T-STAR plus bit gives better engagement and longer bit life. If you are getting through bits quickly using standard Torx, switch to genuine SPAX T-STAR plus bits. Get in touch for SPAX bit packs and screwdriving accessories alongside your screw order.
