About Seaward
Seaward Electronic Ltd was founded in 1988 in County Durham and has concentrated throughout its history on designing and manufacturing electrical safety testing instruments for the UK professional market. The company is best known for its PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) equipment, the test instruments used to check the electrical safety of portable electrical appliances in workplaces under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.
Seaward’s SuperNova Elite, Apollo 600 and Primetest PAT tester ranges are widely used by UK PAT testing contractors, facilities management companies and in-house maintenance teams. The instruments measure earth bond resistance, insulation resistance, protective conductor current and touch current, all of which the IET Code of Practice requires to assess the safety of Class I and Class II electrical appliances. Seaward’s PATGuard software for test record management works alongside the PAT tester range for automated record generation and asset management.
Seaward has also built a strong position in solar PV testing with its Solar Survey and PV150/PV200 series of irradiance meters and PV testers, instruments used by solar PV installers and O&M contractors to verify the performance and safety of solar PV arrays at commissioning and during periodic maintenance. Solar PV array testing is a specialist requirement that conventional electrical test instruments cannot address.

PATGuard software and asset management — Seaward PATGuard 3 software for managing PAT test records, generating test certificates, maintaining asset registers and scheduling retest reminders. PATGuard imports data automatically from Seaward PAT testers via USB and Wi-Fi, and also accepts manual import from third-party PAT testers. PAT testing contractors use it for client record management and certificate generation.
Solar PV test equipment — the Seaward Solar Survey 200R solar irradiance meter and tilt sensor for measuring solar irradiance and module temperature during PV installation testing, plus the Seaward PV150 and PV200 PV installation testers for measuring open circuit voltage, short circuit current, insulation resistance and continuity on solar PV arrays to BS EN 62446. These are required at commissioning of grid-connected solar PV systems in the UK.
Multifunction installation testers — the Seaward Europa Plus and Tester Plus multifunction installation testers for electrical installation testing to BS 7671, covering earth continuity, insulation resistance, loop impedance, RCD testing and prospective fault current. Electricians use them alongside Seaward’s PAT range for a combined electrical safety testing capability from one manufacturer.

Good to Know
There is no legal requirement in the UK to PAT test appliances at any set interval. The requirement is simply that electrical equipment is kept in a safe condition. The IET Code of Practice gives recommended test intervals by appliance type and environment, but these are guidance rather than law. If you are setting up or reviewing a PAT testing programme, base the intervals on a risk assessment.
