About Pferd

August Rüggeberg GmbH & Co. KG, trading as PFERD, was founded in 1799 in Berlin and later moved its manufacturing base to Lüdenscheid in the Sauerland region of Germany. The company produces hand files, power files, rotary burrs, mounted points, wire brushes and a comprehensive range of specialist abrasive tools for precision metalworking. PFERD remains family-owned and has kept its manufacturing in Germany through more than 225 years of continuous operation.

PFERD hand files are among the best known products in the range, made from high-carbon steel with teeth cut precisely to defined profiles (flat, half-round, round, triangular, square and needle file formats) and standardised cut grades from bastard to smooth. The tooth geometry and steel hardness of a PFERD file govern how efficiently it removes material and how long it holds its cutting performance, and these are exactly the points where the difference between a PFERD file and a generic one shows up in daily use.

PFERD’s rotary burr range, tungsten carbide burrs in a comprehensive choice of shapes and sizes for die grinders, air tools and flexible shaft machines, is used in foundry and casting cleaning, weld root preparation, porting, deburring and precision profile grinding. It covers every common cutting profile and tip geometry in standard coarse, medium and fine cut grades to suit different materials and finishing requirements.

Products We Can Supply from Pferd

Hand files, flat, half-round, round and needle — PFERD engineer’s files in flat, hand (safe-edge), half-round, round, triangular and square profiles in lengths from 100 mm to 400 mm, in bastard, second cut and smooth cut grades for progressive finishing, and in needle file sets for precision deburring of small features, ports and threads. They are made from high-carbon steel with teeth cut to DIN standards, and are available as individual files or matched sets.

Tungsten carbide rotary burrs — PFERD TC (tungsten carbide) rotary burrs in cylindrical, ball, oval, cone, tree and flame profiles with a 6 mm shank for die grinders and air tools, in coarse, medium and fine cut grades for steel, cast iron, aluminium and stainless steel. They are used in foundry fettling, casting cleaning, weld root preparation, porting and polishing, deburring castings and forgings, and precision grinding of profiles and features that wheel abrasives cannot reach.

Mounted points and power files — PFERD aluminium oxide and silicon carbide mounted points (wheel and cone profiles on a 6 mm shank) for internal grinding, deburring and finishing in die grinders, along with PFERD power file (PFEILE) abrasive bands and file machines for finishing narrow grooves, slots and profiles that standard abrasive discs cannot reach. These are used in toolmaking, mould and die finishing, and general engineering for precision surface finishing.

Wire brushes and surface conditioning tools — PFERD cup brushes, wheel brushes and end brushes in carbon steel and stainless steel wire for angle grinders and die grinders, plus PFERD POLIMAX surface conditioning discs (equivalent to non-woven abrasive) in very fine, fine and medium grades for surface preparation, deburring and finishing on metal components. PFERD wire brushes are specified in fabrication and casting finishing for their consistent wire fill density and robust construction.

Industries

PFERD tools are used in general engineering and machining workshops, metal fabrication, foundry and casting cleaning, toolmaking and mould and die work, automotive manufacturing and repair, aerospace MRO, shipbuilding, and any precision metalworking application requiring hand filing, rotary burring, mounted point grinding or wire brush cleaning to defined surface quality.

Good to Know

A file should never be used without a handle. The tang, the narrow pointed end that fits into the handle, is not hardened and can pierce a palm if the file catches and the hand drives forward. Always fit a proper handle before use. PFERD files come with and without handles; if you order them without, fit handles before issuing them to operatives. It is a simple safety point that gets overlooked surprisingly often.
