About Norton (Saint-Gobain)
Norton Company was founded in 1885 in Worcester, Massachusetts, originally to make emery wheels for the grinding industry. Over the decades it grew into one of the world’s largest abrasive manufacturers, and today it forms part of Saint-Gobain, the French construction and high-performance materials group. As Saint-Gobain’s abrasives division, Norton manufactures across North America, Europe and Asia.
The Norton range covers the full spectrum, from everyday construction site consumables such as cutting and grinding discs for angle grinders, right through to specialist precision grinding wheels used in machine tool grinding for aerospace and automotive manufacturing. That breadth means Norton can supply abrasives for almost any material removal job, whether it is rough deburring or precision grinding to a tight surface finish.
Backed by Saint-Gobain’s research capability, Norton has developed advanced abrasive grain technologies, including ceramic alumina (Quantum, Quantum Prime) and blended grain constructions, which outperform conventional aluminium oxide in demanding cutting and grinding work. The ceramic grain in Norton Quantum discs fractures in a controlled, self-sharpening way, so it keeps cutting throughout the life of the disc rather than glazing over after the first few cuts.
Products We Can Supply from Norton
Cutting discs for angle grinders — Norton Clipper and Norton Ultra-thin cutting discs come in 115 mm, 125 mm and 230 mm diameters for cutting mild steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals and general masonry. The Norton Quantum cutting disc range handles sustained cutting of difficult materials, including stainless and exotic alloys. Inox grades let you cut stainless without iron contamination, while masonry grades suit concrete and brick.
Grinding discs and flap discs — Norton aluminium oxide and Norton Quantum ceramic alumina grinding discs come in 115 mm and 125 mm formats for weld grinding and surface preparation on mild and stainless steel. Norton Blaze and Classic flap discs in 115 mm and 125 mm cover blending, finishing and weld dressing. The Blaze flap disc uses Norton’s ceramic grain, which gives noticeably longer life in fabrication shop use than a standard aluminium oxide flap disc.
Bonded grinding wheels for bench and pedestal grinders — Norton aluminium oxide bench grinding wheels are available in grey (medium hard, for general steel grinding and tool sharpening) and white (friable, for HSS tools and precision grinding) in standard 150 mm and 200 mm diameters. Norton silicon carbide wheels grind non-ferrous metals, ceramics and cemented carbide. These are the wheels you will find on bench grinders in engineering workshops for tool sharpening, deburring and dressing.
Coated abrasives, belts, sheets and rolls — Norton coated abrasives are offered in aluminium oxide, zirconia alumina and ceramic grain for belt sanders, hand sanding and orbital sanders across woodworking and metalworking. Norton Red Heat aluminium oxide sanding belts suit aggressive material removal on wood, Norton Metalite sanding rolls are made for hand finishing metal, and Norton ProSand hook-and-loop discs work with random orbital sanders in workshop and automotive use.
Industries
Norton abrasives are used in metal fabrication and structural steelwork, automotive bodywork and refinishing, construction and groundworks, woodworking and furniture manufacture, precision engineering and grinding, aerospace and defence manufacturing, shipbuilding, and any professional application involving cutting, grinding, blending or finishing of metal, stone, wood or composite materials.

Good to Know
Norton Quantum ceramic grain discs cost more per disc than standard aluminium oxide, but they tend to remove more material and last considerably longer in fabrication grinding. If your team is changing grinding discs often, the cost per unit of material removed with Quantum often works out lower than with standard oxide. Send us your current disc consumption figures and we can compare the costs against the Quantum range for your application.
