About MSA Safety

MSA Safety Incorporated was founded in 1914 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as the Mine Safety Appliances Company, a name that points back to its original focus on safety equipment for the mining industry. The company grew into one of the world’s largest safety equipment manufacturers, publicly listed on the NYSE, with products used across oil and gas, mining, construction, fire and emergency services, utilities and industrial manufacturing.

The MSA V-Gard safety helmet is one of the most recognisable PPE products in the world. The distinctive pyramid-shaped polyethylene shell, with its characteristic V-shaped brow band and slot-and-tab accessory system, has been a standard specification in the oil and gas and mining sectors for decades. V-Gard helmets are built for the tougher environmental and hazard conditions of those industries, with higher impact and penetration standards, better temperature resistance, and a wider range of accessory options than a standard construction hard hat.

MSA’s gas detection range, the ALTAIR series, covers single-gas and multi-gas detectors for personal gas monitoring in the oil and gas, utilities and industrial maintenance sectors. MSA also produces SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) for fire brigades and emergency response, fall protection systems under the MSA and Latchways brands, and the full range of personal protective equipment that workers in hazardous industrial environments need.

Products We Can Supply from MSA Safety

V-Gard safety helmets. We supply MSA V-Gard standard and full-brim hard hats in white, yellow, orange, red and blue to EN 397, the V-Gard 500 with improved impact performance and a more ergonomic profile, and V-Gard Type II (side-impact rated) where lateral impact protection is required. The V-Gard accessory slots take faceshield, ear defender and lighting attachments. This is the standard specification for many oil and gas, petrochemical and mining operators who specify MSA rather than accepting equivalents from other brands.

ALTAIR gas detectors. The MSA ALTAIR single-gas detectors cover CO, H2S, O2 and combustible gas (LEL) in a compact clip-on format, while the ALTAIR 4X and 5X multi-gas detectors handle four and five simultaneous gases for confined space, utilities and oil and gas work. ALTAIR Connect adds Bluetooth connectivity and gas reading transmission to the MSA Grid connected safety platform. The ALTAIR range is one of the most widely used gas detector series in the UK oil and gas and utilities sectors.

Fall protection — harnesses, lanyards and SRL. MSA and Latchways fall arrest harnesses to EN 361 suit construction, utilities and working at height, with energy-absorbing lanyards in single and twin-leg configurations and self-retracting lanyards (SRL/ISAF) for better mobility at height. MSA Latchways permanent horizontal lifeline systems cover industrial installations where a fixed, continuous anchor is needed. We supply and specify complete fall protection systems against the task risk assessment.

SCBA and supplied air breathing apparatus. MSA AUER and M1 series SCBA suit fire brigades, industrial emergency response and confined space rescue, where the atmospheric hazard demands a fully self-contained air supply rather than a filtering respirator. We can supply compressed air cylinders, demand valves and full-face masks, along with airline breathing systems for prolonged work in immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) atmospheres where a portable cylinder would not last long enough.
