About Klein Tools

Klein Tools was founded in 1857 by Mathias Klein in Chicago, Illinois, originally to repair and make pliers for telegraph linemen. The company’s first major product, the lineman’s pliers, became the standard tool for the American electrical and telecommunications trades and remains the product most closely tied to the Klein name. Klein has stayed family-owned through six generations and still manufactures in the United States, an unusual distinction in a market where most hand tool production has moved to lower-cost regions.

Klein Tools is the dominant brand in the US electrician’s tool market in much the way Knipex is in Germany. Electricians ask for it by name rather than by product category, because the quality, reliability and ergonomics have been proven over decades of daily use. The Klein D213-9N lineman’s pliers and D228-9 combination pliers are the most widely carried tools in the US electrical trades, and that reputation has carried over to UK electricians who choose them for their build quality.

The range has grown well beyond its pliers origins to cover the full set of electrician’s hand tools: screwdrivers, nut drivers, wire strippers, cable cutters, fish tapes, tone and probe kits, tool bags and belts. All hold to the same quality standard and the focus on the electrical trade that has defined the brand since 1857.

Lineman’s pliers and combination pliers. The Klein D213-9N lineman’s pliers bring side cutting, gripping and crimping together in one tool, alongside the D228-9 and D228-8 combination pliers and a related range of side cutters, diagonal cutting pliers and long-nose pliers. Klein pliers use high-carbon steel with induction-hardened cutting edges and comfort-grip handles made for sustained daily use, and the steel quality and edge hardness sit consistently above the market average at comparable prices.

Screwdrivers and nut drivers. Klein electrician’s screwdrivers have precision-machined tips to ANSI standards and cushion-grip handles with a larger-diameter grip zone for more torque transfer than standard handles, along with the Klein trademark round shank and blade. Insulated screwdrivers to EN 60900 (1000V rated) cover live working, and nut drivers run from 1/4\” to 1/2\” AF for hex screw and terminal work.

Wire strippers and cable tools. The Klein 11047 and 11054 self-adjusting wire strippers strip solid and stranded wire from 10 AWG to 20 AWG with a single squeeze of the handle. Traditional stripping pliers with individual notch gauges handle precise gauge stripping, and the cable cutters and ratchet cable cutters come in jaw sizes from small-gauge control cable up to large-diameter armoured cable.

Fish tapes, probes and tool bags. Steel and fibreglass fish tapes in lengths from 15 m to 45 m pull cable through conduit and wall cavities, tone and probe kits trace and identify cable runs, and Klein tool bags and belts in nylon and leather construction organise and carry an electrician’s full tool complement on site.
