About Dräger

Drägerwerk AG & Co. KGaA was founded in 1889 in Lübeck, Germany, by Johann Heinrich Dräger and his son Bernhard. The company’s early work in pressure regulation technology, which began with beer tap pressure regulators and moved into medical gas systems, laid the engineering foundation for what became one of the world’s leading manufacturers of medical and safety technology. The company remains family-controlled from Lübeck to this day, an exceptional run of continuity for a company of its scale and technical sophistication.

In the industrial safety market, Dräger is best known for two product categories: gas detection and breathing protection. The gas detection range, covering portable personal monitors and fixed installed systems, is used in oil and gas, chemical processing, utilities, mining, the fire service and any environment where atmospheric monitoring is a safety requirement. The breathing protection range, covering self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), airline breathing systems and escape devices, is used in confined space entry, industrial emergency response, fire fighting and hazardous material handling.

The Dräger name carries considerable weight in safety-critical environments precisely because the company has been making life-safety equipment for well over a century, and its reputation for engineering quality is backed by that long track record. In sectors where the failure of safety equipment has immediate and potentially fatal consequences, such as firefighting, confined space entry and chemical emergency response, the choice of Dräger equipment reflects a deliberate decision to use a brand with proven reliability rather than a lower-cost alternative.

Products We Can Supply from Dräger

Portable gas detectors include the X-am series personal gas monitors for confined space entry, industrial maintenance and emergency response. The X-am 2500 monitors up to four gases simultaneously (O₂, CO, H₂S, LEL) in a compact, robust form factor, while the X-am 5000 and X-am 8000 extend this to five and eight gases respectively for more complex atmospheric monitoring requirements. All are ATEX and IECEx certified for use in explosive atmospheres, and the Dräger Pac series provides single-gas monitoring for CO, H₂S, O₂ and other specific hazards.

Fixed gas detection systems include the Polytron series fixed gas transmitters for continuous monitoring in plant rooms, storage areas, compressor stations and processing facilities. They are available for flammable gases, toxic gases and oxygen, with 4–20 mA, HART and Modbus output options for integration into plant control and safety systems. The Polytron 5000 and 7000 are widely used in UK process industry installations.

Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) includes the PSS series for firefighting, confined space rescue and industrial emergency response. The PSS 7000 is the current flagship industrial SCBA, offering a 30- or 60-minute air supply from a composite cylinder with an integrated HUD (Heads-Up Display) pressure warning. It is used by UK fire services and industrial emergency response teams where reliable respiratory protection in IDLH atmospheres is required.

Escape devices and airline breathing systems include self-rescue devices for workers in environments where an atmospheric emergency requires immediate evacuation, and compressed air line breathing systems for sustained work in contaminated atmospheres where SCBA weight and duration are limiting factors. They are used in chemical plants, confined space operations and industrial facilities where the risk of sudden atmospheric contamination is defined.

Industries

Dräger equipment is used in oil and gas production and refining, chemical and petrochemical processing, utilities and water treatment, fire and rescue services, mining, offshore platforms, pharmaceutical manufacturing, food and beverage production, confined space operations, industrial emergency response teams, and any environment where atmospheric hazards or IDLH conditions require reliable gas detection and respiratory protection.

Good to Know

Dräger gas detectors need periodic calibration and bump testing, and for life-safety applications that maintenance programme is not optional. Dräger supplies calibration accessories, certified calibration gases and service support for its instrument range. If you are setting up a gas detection programme for confined space entry or process plant monitoring, get in touch and we can advise on the right equipment and maintenance approach.
