Forstner bits are available in individual sizes and sets from 10 mm to 60 mm for boring clean, flat-bottomed blind holes in timber and sheet materials. They are used for hinge cup recesses (35 mm is the European standard hinge cup diameter), shelf pin drilling, dowel pockets and general joinery work where a flat-bottomed hole is required. The rim-cutting design gives better accuracy and surface finish than spade bits for this type of application.

Flat bits (spade bits) are flat wood boring bits for fast through-hole drilling in timber, used by electricians, plumbers and joiners for cable and pipe runs through timber framing. The flat bit is the fastest and most economical way to bore large through-holes in structural timber where surface finish in the hole is not a priority. Dart flat bits are available in sizes from 10 mm to 38 mm.
