Crowcon.
A British gas detection manufacturer founded in Oxford in 1970 and now part of the Halma safety technology group. It produces portable and fixed gas detection equipment used across oil and gas, chemical processing, utilities and confined space working throughout the UK and internationally.

About Crowcon
Crowcon Detection Instruments was founded in Oxford in 1970, establishing itself as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of gas detection equipment for industrial safety applications. The company is part of Halma plc, the FTSE 100 global group focused on safety, health and environmental technology, which gives Crowcon access to significant engineering and development resources while keeping the focused product identity of a gas detection specialist.
Gas detection is a safety-critical function in industries where flammable, toxic or oxygen-depleting gases are present, and the consequences of inadequate detection range from equipment damage to fatalities. Crowcon’s product range covers both the portable detectors that workers carry into potentially hazardous environments and the fixed detection systems permanently installed in plant rooms, storage facilities, pump stations and processing areas. Both types of detection serve the same fundamental purpose: providing audible and visual warning before gas concentrations reach dangerous levels.
Crowcon’s instruments are certified to ATEX and IECEx standards for use in explosive atmospheres, which is a requirement in many of the environments where gas detection is needed. A gas detector that is itself a potential ignition source is not fit for purpose in a Zone 1 or Zone 2 hazardous area classification. The combination of ATEX certification, calibration support and the technical depth of the product range makes Crowcon a common specification in formal safety cases and hazardous area risk assessments across UK industry.
Products We Can Supply from Crowcon
Portable multi-gas detectors. The Crowcon Tetra 3 is one of the most widely used multi-gas detectors in UK confined space and industrial applications, simultaneously monitoring for up to four gases including oxygen (O₂), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) and flammable gases (LEL). Its compact, robust design and long battery life make it practical for confined space entry procedures, where workers must carry the instrument throughout the entry. It is ATEX certified and suitable for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas.
Single-gas clip detectors. The Crowcon Clip range provides lightweight, low-cost single-gas detection for workers who need protection against a specific hazard, typically CO, H₂S or O₂ depletion. It is disposable after a fixed service life (typically two years), removing the need for sensor replacement and calibration. It is used extensively in water treatment, sewer inspection, utilities maintenance and any application where the target gas is well defined and single-gas monitoring is sufficient.
Fixed gas detection heads and transmitters. The Xgard and Xgard Bright fixed detection heads for permanent installation in plant rooms, compressor stations, boiler houses, storage areas and other locations requiring continuous monitoring. They are available for a wide range of target gases including natural gas (methane), CO, H₂S, O₂, ammonia, chlorine and many others, with output signals compatible with most industrial gas detection controllers and safety PLCs.
Gas detection controllers and systems. Multi-channel gas detection controllers for receiving signals from fixed detectors and activating alarms, ventilation systems and other responses. The Crowcon Gasmaster range provides modular, expandable control for facilities with multiple detection points across a site or building.
Industries
Crowcon gas detection equipment is used in oil and gas production and refining, petrochemical and chemical processing, water and wastewater treatment, utilities and power generation, confined space operations, offshore platforms, laboratories, food and beverage production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and any industrial environment where flammable, toxic or asphyxiating gases are present as a defined occupational health or safety hazard.

Good to Know
Gas detectors need regular calibration and bump testing to confirm they’re working correctly. A detector that has failed silently is worse than no detector at all. Crowcon instruments support both activities, and calibration gas and bump test equipment are available. If you’re setting up a confined space programme, get in touch and we can advise on the right equipment and maintenance regime.
