About Atlas Copco

Atlas Copco was founded in Stockholm in 1873, at first to manufacture railway equipment and later moving into steam engines and mechanical engineering. The move into compressed air and pneumatic equipment came in the early twentieth century and proved transformative. By the mid-1900s the company had established itself as one of the leading names in industrial compressors and pneumatic tools worldwide, and the name as we know it today was formalised in the 1950s during a period of rapid expansion.

Today Atlas Copco is a Swedish multinational operating across more than 180 countries, with revenues exceeding 180 billion Swedish kronor. The part most relevant to manufacturing and engineering customers is the industrial tools and assembly systems division, which produces pneumatic and electric tools for grinding, drilling, fastening and assembly, alongside precision torque systems for applications where every fastener joint has to be made to a documented specification. That matters in automotive, aerospace and rail manufacturing, where incorrect torque can have safety implications.

In 2018 Atlas Copco separated its mining and rock excavation equipment business into a standalone company called Epiroc, while the industrial tools, assembly systems and compressor businesses stayed with Atlas Copco. The tools and assembly division continues to set the pace in precision fastening, particularly through the Tensor range of electric nutrunners and the QMC pneumatic tools widely used on automotive body-in-white and powertrain assembly lines.

Products We Can Supply from Atlas Copco

Pneumatic angle grinders and straight grinders. The LSF and LGA series are tough, high-cycle tools built for production environments rather than occasional use. The vane motors are made to consistent tolerances that give them a notably long service life next to lesser pneumatic tools, which counts where tool downtime carries a direct cost.

Pneumatic drills and tapping tools. Straight and pistol-grip pneumatic drill motors, reversible drills for tapping, and multi-speed drill units for production drilling in metal and composite. Atlas Copco pneumatic drills are specified in aerospace assembly where cycle consistency and torque control are critical.

Pneumatic impact wrenches. Square-drive impact wrenches in 1/2″, 3/4″ and 1″ drive for heavy fastening in vehicle assembly, truck maintenance, plant installation and general engineering. They deliver high torque with notably lower vibration than many competitors at equivalent torque levels.

Tensor electric nutrunners and assembly tools. The Tensor range covers electric transducer-controlled nutrunners, from small electric screwdrivers for electronics assembly through to high-torque joint controllers for structural fastening. Torque and angle are measured and recorded on every joint, producing assembly documentation for quality management systems. The range is widely used in automotive, aerospace, rail and precision electronics manufacturing.

Pneumatic screwdrivers and fixtured tools. Production screwdrivers in clutch, stall and transducer-controlled variants for assembly line use, plus fixtured tooling systems for high-cycle applications where operator fatigue and consistency are both production concerns.

Industries

Atlas Copco industrial tools are used in automotive manufacturing and assembly, aerospace and defence, commercial vehicle manufacturing, rail and rolling stock, electronics and white goods assembly, power generation, oil and gas equipment manufacturing, and general industrial production. The precision assembly tools in particular are standard equipment in any manufacturing environment where fastener torque has to be documented and traceable.

Good to Know

The Tensor range of electric assembly tools can be integrated with assembly line control systems to record torque and angle data on every joint. If you are working to ISO 9001, IATF 16949 or AS9100 quality standards, the ability to produce joint documentation automatically is worth weighing up when you specify the tool.
