About ABUS

ABUS was founded in 1924 in Wetter an der Ruhr, Germany, by August Bremicker. The company name is taken from the founder’s initials and his surname: A. Bremicker und Söhne, meaning August Bremicker and Sons. It started as a padlock manufacturer and remains, nearly a century later, one of the most respected names in security hardware. The company is still family-owned and run from Germany, which is unusual for a business of its scale and says a lot about the long-term thinking behind how it develops its products.

ABUS is perhaps most widely recognised for its padlocks, which range from basic brass padlocks to high-security close-shackle designs used in police-recommended installations. Alongside these, the industrial safety division has grown into a significant business in its own right. Lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures are a legal requirement wherever energy isolation is needed before maintenance work, and ABUS produces one of the most comprehensive ranges of LOTO equipment available to UK industry.

Products We Can Supply from ABUS

Safety padlocks — ABUS safety padlocks are available in keyed-alike and keyed-different configurations, in a range of body sizes and shackle lengths to suit different isolation points. Colour-coded padlocks let different contractors or trades use their own assigned locks on a shared hasp during group isolation procedures, which is a requirement of most formal LOTO programmes.

Lockout/tagout devices — valve lockout devices for ball valves, gate valves and butterfly valves, circuit breaker lockouts, plug lockouts, cable lockout devices and universal lockout devices for non-standard isolation points. Most are made from hardened nylon or steel with a tamper-evident design that makes bypassing the isolation both difficult and visible.

Hasps and group isolation devices — multi-lock hasps that allow several padlocks to be applied to the same isolation point at once. These are essential for multi-trade maintenance, where each person working on an isolated system applies their own lock before work begins and removes it only when their work is complete.
